This quilt square is a collage of many faces (including the iconic Mr. Rogers).
In the center is one of Pittsburgh's yellow bridges. These images tell us that no matter what our differences,
love is the "bridge" that unites us, a message that can guide us during this difficult time.

I choose to create a quilt square featuring people of all shapes,
colors and design stitched on a worn pocket. The fabric-people display flag patterns from
different places in my colorful community of unity. Old jean pockets became the background
material when I remembered the saying, "I have them in my pocket" along with the thought of
"carry each other."
The parade of fabric-people dipping in and around a jean pocket
could be a community of function or disfunction. Are they holding hands, or keeping others
at bay? It is the challenge of any community to see the others and to have self-awareness
of meeting your own as well as others' needs.

"Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences,
penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope." ~ Maya Angelou
My grandmother was a quilter and although I
never made beautiful bed quilts as she did, years ago, I made this 12 x 12 square
with the simple message of "LOVE." Love must be at the heart of creating unity within communities.

"The obstacle that prevents us from creating community for all is our own thoughts.
We can choose to see the many different colors on a tree or we can choose to see all the beautiful leaves.
There is no them, only Us."
